Freedom Tree Symbols

By Julie Barnes

2026 marks the 250th Anniversary of our American Independence.   In this 250th Anniversary Year of the United States, the National Park Service, together with, Casey Trees are planting 250 native and historic trees, including Willow Oaks, Red Maples, and Jefferson Elms, across Washington, D.C. There are other major initiatives included, as well, such as the gifting of 250 cherry blossom trees from Japan and the planting of "Liberty Trees" in Pennsylvania.

"250 Years of America, 250 Trees for its Capital" is an effort that aims to raise $125,000 in funds for planting and long-term tree care. This campaign has already raised more than $54,000 through early community outreach. In partnership with National Capital Parks - East, which manages National Park Service sites, across parts of Washington and nearby Maryland suburbs, the campaign will begin plantings in spring 2026 that will continue throughout 2026. "There's no better way to make DC special than an investment into a future urban forest that offers shade, clean air, and beauty in the parks and green spaces, according to Andrew Schichtel, Executive Director of Casey Trees. Planting will occur in two phases: 80 trees are to be professionally planted in Capitol Hill Parks, spring, 2026, with remaining ones planted over the course of the year that will include ongoing maintenance. Selections of native or notable species trees are meant to enhance the public landscape's character, as well as thrive, in the district's environment. This campaign is supported by sponsoring a tree, donating, or sharing news of this effort.

A Special Birthday Gift of 250 New Cherry Blossom Trees from Japan will add to America's festivities in the nation's capital too. Nothing signifies the arrival of spring quite like the cherry blossom trees blooming in an unforgettable sea of pink and white along the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park. To celebrate this occasion, the National Cherry Blossom Festival (March 20 to April 12) is held every year to honor American and Japanese cultures. In 1912, Mayor Yukio Ozaki from the city of Tokyo gifted 3,020 cherry blossom trees to Washington, DC. This four-week springtime celebration represents the close bond forged between Japan and the U.S. The new cherry blossom trees will again serve as another thriving symbol of the steadfast friendship between the two countries as they are planted in phases around the Tidal Basin and other prominent areas in the district, including the U.S. National Arboretum and Anacostia Park. Visitors can expect even more spectacular blossom displays in the coming years.

Planting PA Liberty Trees for the 250th - The "Liberty Tree" was a large elm tree located near the Boston Commons. The area under its branches became a popular meeting place for The Sons of Liberty during the American Revolutionary War.  However, Boston Loyalists and British soldiers cut the stately elm tree down and burned it in 1775 during the Siege of Boston. In commemoration of the original Liberty Tree, America250PA, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Freemasons has been planting one tree in each of the 67 Pennsylvania counties, in advance of America's 250th Anniversary, beginning in fall, 2021 and continuing thru 2026.The tree species planted were grown from scions of original historic liberty trees.
